At the end of May, I met up with A&G for their Polly Cove engagement session, their location of choice for the session. The Polly Cove hiking trail is located just outside Halifax, (also minutes from Peggy’s Cove), and hugs a rugged stretch of coastline. It has ocean views from almost every direction and lots of space to wander. A&G brought their ever-so-cute doggo along for the shoot who was all smiles and very entertaining at moments (you’ll see what I mean in the photos)!
If you’re thinking about including your dog in your own Polly Cove engagement session (or any outdoor shoot), here are a few tips to help things go smoothly:
1. Bring snacks and water
Treats are the best way to get your dog’s attention when needed. Water’s always a good idea, especially if it’s warm out or you’re planning to walk a bit. Polly Cove is a bit of a hike, so water is a good idea for everyone!
2. A little pre-session exercise helps
Let your dog get some energy out beforehand with a short walk or play session. This might make them a bit more relaxed once we start taking photos.
3. Consider bringing a friend or family member
Having someone on hand to take care of your dog when they’re not in the photos can be a big help. That way we can get a few dog-free shots without worrying about holding a leash or being distracted.
4. Go with the flow
Dogs don’t always pose perfectly but that’s okay. Some of the best moments are the unscripted ones.
