“What should we do for our engagement session?” I get this question a lot. And honestly, the best sessions usually involve something simple, something you already enjoy doing together. Ordering pizza, grabbing ice cream, going for a walk, visiting your favourite bar or café. It doesn’t have to be too elaborate, just personal.
That’s exactly what Laura and Liam did for their engagement session. Ahead of their session, they sent me a note mentioning that they really wanted the photos to feel like them and that they brainstormed a few locations for the session. Those locations were: Salvatore’s Pizzeria in Halifax (where they had their first date), a few favourite spots in downtown Dartmouth (where they spend a lot of time), and the Celtic Corner which happens to be the bar where they met.
Let these photos be a great reminder that your engagement session doesn’t have to be too complicated and that the most meaningful photos usually come from the everyday things that already matter to you!
Tips for Planning an Engagement Session That Feels Like You
1. Choose locations with personal meaning
Pick spots that are part of your life together. This could be where you had your first date, spend weekends, or just feel most like yourselves. These places will help you feel more comfortable and connected during the shoot.
2. Plan a casual activity you already enjoy.
Think about what you love doing together: grabbing coffee, walking the dog, getting pizza, browsing a bookstore. Building your session around something familiar makes the photos feel more natural (and you’ll have more fun!)
3. Dress like yourselves—just a touch more polished.
Aim for outfits you feel good in but still feel like you. Coordinated colours or layers can add a little visual interest but comfort and authenticity will keep you relaxed and confident.
4. Think of it as a mini date.
Treat the session like time together, not a photoshoot you have to perform for. Laugh, talk, wander, and enjoy the experience. The best photos usually come from in-between moments anyway.
