A few photos from Jordyn and Gabe’s beach engagement session in May last year. It was such a pleasure to work with these two, they had a really fun and playful energy. Not being from Nova Scotia, they asked for a few location suggestions before the shoot and settled on Lawrencetown Beach once the saw a few photos from there!
Planning your own beach engagement session? Here are a few preparation tips!
Time It Right (Golden Hour!)
- Schedule the session during golden hour for soft, flattering light and a dreamy atmosphere. I like to start my sessions about 1.5 hours before sunset
- The weather in Nova Scotia can be a little unpredictable so check the weather often the day or two leading up to your session. In most cases I will try to move the shoot a little earlier in the day to avoid and weather but we can always reschedule if that is the better option.
Pack Essentials
- A towel for sandy feet and for a prop to sit on in some of the photos
- Flip-flops or other footwear that’s easy to remove or walk in on sand
- Bug spray (is usually a must have!) and sunscreen if needed
Choose Beach-Friendly Outfits
- Flowy fabrics like linen look great in the breeze.
- Neutrals, pastels, and earth tones photograph nicely against sand and sea
- Bring a change of clothes (Especially if you plan to get wet or want variety in your images)
Bring Props for the Photos
- A little bottle of champagne is fun for a few shots
- Bring swim suits for fun photos in the ocean
- Sunglasses, beach hat or other accessories to add to your outfit
- A beach blanket is always great for photos!
A note on bringing your pet to the photo session:
Yes, you can definitely bring your pet to your beach engagement session! Including your pet can make your photos even more personal and meaningful. Here are a few tips to make it go smoothly:
- Keep Them on a Leash
It’s safest to keep your pet leashed at all times.
- Bring a Helper
It’s best to bring a friend or family member who can watch your pet when they’re not in the photos. That way, you can focus on each other during the rest of the session
- Time It Right
Consider including your pet at the beginning or end of the shoot
- Pack for Them Too
Don’t forget water, treats, and a waste bag
